Luke’s Story….
On September 1, 2021 Adopt a Friend for Life received a phone call regarding an eleven year old Cocker Spaniel left out on a porch that needed immediate relinquishment. The relinquisher reported that the dog could not be let inside, even overnight, due to excessive odor. The following day, Luke made his way to foster care in AFL. He came in great need of love and medical attention. Thankfully, Luke was able to receive immediate treatments at Paw Paw Vet Clinic for a double ear infection, hookworm, eye mucus and several other infections related to severely progressed dental disease and unresolved skin problems. Almost immediately Luke received grooming from Adriana’s Pet Designs for excessive matting, fleas and overgrown nails that impacted his ability to walk. Luke’s fosters spent his first night in their home giving him lots of love and cutting food wrappers from his fur. A few weeks in, Luke required immediate dental extractions due to continued bleeding from his mouth. He was left with eight teeth but felt noticeably more comfortable. Many of the teeth that he wasn’t already missing had to be extracted due to the severity of decay and rotting. In spite of the condition Luke came into the rescue, his tail was always wagging! While in foster care, Luke found a lot of joy in snuggling next to the people he loves on the couch and indulging in things every dog should…..ice cream, dune climbs, walks on the beach, treat shopping, and so much more! He worked hard to build his leg muscles enough to stay on his feet and jump onto the couch by himself. He even completed a community 5K! He visited a nursing home once a week to bring joy to the residents, which also gave him much joy. He proved that he would always be a loyal, friendly and loving companion. He definitly made up for lost time by always being up for anything. Luke found his perfect forever home on November 15, 2021. With his new family, he has several beds to lounge in and people home to love him all day. He is already spoiled! We are excited for his well-deserved and happy new beginning!
Help us help more like Luke!
We are in immediate need of a few volunteers willing to assist our foster home parents with dog or cat sitting while they are unexpectedly called away from home or need respite time. Depending on the situation the volunteer may need to keep the foster pet at their home for a day or two up to perhaps a week. You will be trained as an AFL foster home volunteer. This is a great way to help animals in need on a short term basis. Click on the link below to fill out a volunteer application or to find out more ways you can help….
